Anyone have water pump problems with a trans am?

pump repairing

I have 1995 trans am(standard shift). I bought it in 1994 and I have over 229,000 miles on it. In the years I have had the car, the water pump has been replaced 3 times. Is that a little excessive? A friend told me that the design for the water pump on this car is not very good, but I still think that a water pump should not be changed out that many times in 13 years. I know a couple of pumps were rebuilt, so maybe the pump did not have much life left. I am supposedly getting a new water pump on this repair. So hopefully this will last a while.

Typically when water pumps go out frequently it’s a sign of poor condition in the cooling system. Maybe you need to have your cooling system flushed really good, or there’s something in the area that’s flowing bad water into the waterpump.
I’ve noticed in my little experience that if a seal, or device goes bad – it’s actually another symtom causing the problem to re-occur. For example, a few years ago I thought my transmission was sticking on my old Tarus – so I added some trans-additive to help. About 8 months later the seals began to crack and leak.

Hope this helps. If youre doing the work yourself, maybe you should get a second or third person to help you out, to make sure everything is being done perfectly. If youre bringing it to a mechanic, explain to the mechanic the re-ocurring problem, and see what they say.

also if you are missing the bottom air deflector it can cause cooling problems as well…it gets really bad windflow without it and can cause your car to over heat.
